From 18 to 20 May 2011, we hosted Dr Karol Kumpfer and Dr Harry O. Whiteside in Ljubljana, who provided training in the framework of the Strengthening Families Programme, an American family prevention programme. It is a scientifically proven effective family prevention programme based on skills training in families.
Culturally adapted versions of the programme are sometimes up to 40% more successful than the original version, especially when it comes to long-term retention of skills and their long-term application in practice. The programme builds on protective factors such as: (1) improving family relationships; (2) improving parenting skills; and (3) increasing social and other life skills in children and adolescents. In the next school year, we will implement a pilot phase of the programme with the help of 8 colleagues who have received training. With the help of selected primary schools, we will invite at least 10 families to take part in the programme, which means that at least 15 parents and at least 20 of their children will be involved.
